Global success of Lanka Premier League 2021 season promises a big future for T20 cricket across the world | Anil Mohan

The second season of the Lanka Premier League in 2021 proved to be a massive success in every way possible. The fast-paced T20 league cricket tournament had faced numerous hurdles before the start of the event, the presence of an ongoing pandemic being the biggest one.

But the IPG Group and Sri Lanka Cricket joined hands together to cross all the hurdles in place and successfully hold the tournament featuring 5 teams and 24 matches in December 2021. Apart from veteran Sri Lanka stars and rising domestic talent, renowned overseas cricketers from all around the world came to take part in the prestigious tournament.

The success of the second edition of Lanka Premier League 2021 can be noted from the fact that the entire tournament was held without any case of Covid in the tournament’s bio-bubble.

It was a difficult task to hold a tournament of this nature with the Covid-19 pandemic still affecting lives all across the world. The buzz for the final was an indication that fans want the fast-paced cricketing action in the country and all around the world. It was absolutely brilliant to see the tickets being sold out for the Final and to see the fans having a great time and getting to watch a terrific contest

There is a lot of talent in Sri Lanka and the future for T20 cricket is bright across the world, as witnessed by the growth of LPL in two years. We expect to be bigger and better next year as Lanka Premier League third season rolls on

The competition was widely watched in all cricket-loving nations which include India, Pakistan, Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Bangladesh and the host nation Sri Lanka.

The final of LPL 2021 between Jaffna Kings and Galle Gladiators saw a full house at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota with 11,000 cricket fans coming to the stadium to watch the epic encounter in which Jaffna Kings won by 23 runs to clinch the trophy.
