Experience vs Young Blood | Should Sarfaraz be in the Test Squad?

The Squad selection for England’s tour of Pakistan is the talk of the town at the moment. While England announced their squad way earlier than Pakistan, the hosts are yet to name their red-ball squad. Most of the players will likely remain the same as of previous Test Series of Pakistan, however, there is a news circulating that Pakistan might go in the series without a backup wicket keeper or a new face may be seen this time as backup wicket-keeping choice.

Earlier, it was Sarfaraz Ahmed who used to be the backup choice of Pakistan with the gloves. Sarfaraz Ahmed also has a red ball central contract of the PCB. The news circulating that Sarfaraz Ahmed will be axed from the Test Squad now is not a great one at all.

The entire debate is around two points, whether Pakistan should continue with Sarfaraz after his stellar performances in Quaid-e-Azam trophy 2022 or they should look for someone new to groom him.

Currently a certain group of experts believe that Sarfaraz is the right choice while others believe that Haseebullah Khan should be picked. Sarfaraz Ahmed has scored 394 runs in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam trophy at an average of 43 in 7 matches. Haseebullah Khan on the other hand has played 9 games, yet his runs are lesser than Sarfaraz. Haseebullah has scored 372 runs at an average of 33.

With better numbers and better experience, Sarfaraz Ahmed should be the obvious choice however, the fact that Haseebullah Khan is the future of Pakistan cannot be overlooked either. The answer to whether Pakistan should prefer Sarfaraz or Haseebullah as backup is quite simple. For the ongoing World Test Championship, Pakistan can go with Sarfaraz Ahmed. Calling Haseebullah Khan so early in the national team will also won’t work for Pakistan. Haseebullah has only played just 9 FC games as of now. But as soon as this World Test Championship ends in 2023, they should work on Haseebullah Khan or any other talent that fits the role.

Since Sarfaraz also has a red-ball contract, it is unlikely that he will opt to retire soon. So it will be better if he is kept with the team till the end of Pakistan’s World Test Championship 2021-23 and then they can work with a new prospect, saying good bye to 35-year old veteran.
