  • 2

Before the Pakistan Super League 6, Islamabad United was strongly believed by many experts as the one which can lift the trophy. The red army, having accumulated six points and grabbing the third spot on the points table, were all set to face Lahore Qalandars before the PSL got postponed after positive cases emerged.

The two-time champions had their most incredible victory against the Karachi Kings when a huge target of 197 was set by the Kings which required a Herculean effort to chase it down. However, Alex Hale’s whirlwind innings and Asif Ali’s grand finish at the end handed Islamabad their hard-fought win.

The United’s only loss was against Peshawar Zalmi when an ordinary performance from the batting lineup caused their defeat.

The red army will be once again banking on their abundance of talent. The side will be led by Shadab Khan who himself will be hoping for his change of fortunes with the bat and the ball for a comeback in Pakistan’s T20I squad. The premium Pakistan’s paceman Hasan Ali who picked up six wickets at an average of 14.83 in Karachi leg, will be the key player for the management.

Pakistan’s all-format all-rounder Faheem Ashraf can bring the opposition’s scoring rate down with his consistent line and length. Moreover, Hussain Talat and Iftikhar Ahmad will provide stability as well as timely big shots in the middle order. While the out of form Asif Ali can look forward to the Abu Dhabi leg as an opportunity to make a strong case for his reconsideration in the national squad.

The 18-year-old pace prodigy Zeeshan Zameer will be the one to watch out for in the Abu Dhabi leg.

Islamabad United will miss the services of Alex Hales, Paul Stirling, Phil Salt, Chris Jordan, Lewis Gregory, Reece Topley and Janneman Malan.

The two-time champions with this well-balanced squad can go a long way in the Abu Dhabi leg. However, if the batting order remains unsettled then it would be difficult to expect consistent performances from them.
